This Privacy Policy explains how Lineage Tree (“we”, “us”, “our”) collects, uses, and shares information when you use our website and related services (the “Service”). By creating an account or using the Service, you acknowledge this policy.

1. Who we are

Lineage Tree is a public historical lineage graph: people, relationships, collections, proposals, debates, and optional private family trees. Operational privacy requests: privacy@recordsandhistory.com.

2. Information we collect

Account information. Name, email address, password (stored hashed), and optional profile bio. Email is private by default and is not shown on public profile cards.

Content you submit. Lineage proposals, comments, disputes, private-tree data you create or share, access requests, and similar contributions.

Technical & usage data. IP address, browser/device information, cookies or similar technologies needed for login sessions (including CSRF protection), and basic server logs used for security and reliability.

Legal acceptance. When you register, we record timestamps showing you accepted the Terms of Service and this Privacy Policy.

3. How we use information

• Provide, maintain, and improve the Service
• Authenticate accounts and verify email when required
• Moderate content and enforce our Terms of Service
• Send service-related messages (e.g. verification, security)
• Protect against abuse, fraud, and security incidents
• Comply with law and respond to lawful requests

4. Public vs private content

Historical people, edges, collections, and editorial copy on the public graph are intended to be public. Your display name and any bio you mark public may appear on your public profile. Private lineage trees and related materials are visible only to you and people you grant access to, subject to moderation and legal process exceptions described in our Terms.

5. Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We may share information with:

• Service providers who help us host email, infrastructure, or analytics, under contractual obligations to protect data
• Other users, when you publish content or grant private-tree access
• Authorities or third parties when required by law or to protect rights, safety, or the integrity of the Service

6. Retention

We keep account and contribution data while your account is active and as needed to operate the Service. If you delete your account, we follow our account-deletion process (including soft-delete / quarantine of private lineage and later PII purge schedules where applicable). Backups and legal holds may retain data longer.

7. Security

We use industry-standard measures such as hashed passwords and session protections. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure; use a strong unique password and protect your login.

8. Your choices

• Update name, bio, and bio visibility in account settings
• Change email (subject to verification) and password
• Request account deletion through account settings where available
• Contact privacy@recordsandhistory.com for access, correction, or deletion requests we can reasonably honor

9. Children

The Service is not directed to children under 16 (or the age required in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has registered, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.

10. International users

The Service may be hosted or operated from locations other than where you live. By using the Service you understand your information may be processed in those locations, subject to applicable law.

11. Changes

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will post the revised version through the Service and update the revision date shown on the Privacy Policy page. Material changes may be highlighted in-product when practicable.
